UK Border Agency swoops on Bolton restaurant

20 May 2010

An Indian restaurant in Manchester faces a fine of £10,000 for illegally employing a Pakistani male with no legal right to work in the UK.

Yesterday evening officers from the UK Border Agency targeted the Lal Qila restaurant and takeaway in Chorley Old Road, Bolton.

Officers form the UK Border Agency targeted the premises just after 15:00 and following document checks discovered a Pakistani man aged 31-year-old.

The business was served with a notice of potential liability order in relation to the man found illegally working. The employer now has 28 days to provide the UK Border Agency with evidence that the correct right-to-work checks were carried out or face a fine of up to £10,000.

Eddy Montgomery, operations director of the UK Border Agency in the North West, said:

'We will not tolerate illegal working, in Manchester or anywhere else; it undercuts British wages and exploits vulnerable workers. As long as there are illegal jobs, the UK will be an attractive place for illegal immigrants. That's why we have to put a stop to employers who don't play by the rules.

'Anyone in Merseyside who takes on a foreign national without permission to work in the UK is breaking the law, undermining law abiding businesses and faces a big fine.

'There are strict rules about which foreign nationals can get a job in the UK and businesses have a clear responsibility to carry out the right checks.'

Suspension of Tier 4 student applications in North India, Nepal and Bangladesh

31 January 2010

The UK Border Agency has announced that, from 1 February 2010, it is not accepting any new applications under the Tier 4 student route of the points-based system at the following visa application centres:

  • North India - New Delhi, Jalandhar and Chandigarh
  • Bangladesh - Dhaka, Sylhet and Chittagong
  • Nepal - Kathmandu

From 22 February 2010, any student who applies by post or at one of the public enquiry offices, to study in the UK under Tier 4 of the points-based system must possess a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) from their prospective sponsor.
